In all respects, Ravens is a killer design.

The issue, if you can even call it that, is that what makes Ravens such a good design, are quite familiar attributes to what a Howlet customer has become perfectly aware of.

Layered textures, such as ‘wings’ work so well at giving a design depth and wrapping a design into a whole piece. They don’t age poorly, in fact, the wear and tear adds to the feature. Gives it a ‘this ones mine’ feel. Something that is missing from finer detailed designs.

Another aspect that takes this design to another level is the nordic compass.

In previous years, we’ve rocketed designs through that even give a slight nod to the nordic compass, purely based on how visually powerful and honestly, just cool looking the nordic compass is. However, Ravens hasn’t crudely blasted it as a central focus. It’s subtle and something the viewer discovers on the 3rd or 4th take. That takes minerals.

Again, we make jewellery for the wearer, not for the viewer. Intrinsic value comes from something shared between the wearer and the piece. Not from the reaction it garners from an on-looker.

The wings on the side are a not only strong feature by nature of them coming through the shank, under the the signet face - the wings themselves are highly detailed and we’ve designed in a fairly deep and notable canal around the wings which really allows them to be very distinguishable from the surface. It’s hard to properly explain, but let me give is a nudge…

Silver in affect is like a mirror - reflecting any surface it is near, therefore often sculptural detail can be hard to visually digest. It can look like a big ball of shiny material. Therefore, we design in a lot of features that help ‘pronounce’ the details.

It came out looking really slick.

I would usually be in the tough position of needing to make a final call on the winning design for the year… However, by a timely stroke of clarity - we decided to hand the final decision over to our customers, to vote with their orders during August. In among the two other finalists. The winning design to be released into the 2024 Howlet Collection, to be sold for the entire year.

Then in September, we run it back, with another three finalists from the Top 10. Keep yourself close…
